What Makes Us Want To Keep Secrets?

“A gossip betrays a confidence but a trustworthy man keeps a secret.” Proverbs 11:13–14

If someone says they don’t have any secrets, they probably have so many secrets they could fill up a suitcase. You could be the coolest dad out there. A great family man, your kids love you, and your wife thinks you are the greatest father since ice cream.

You are all into serving your community. You can always be counted on. You could be the nicest person in the world and have grace and poise dripping off of you. “You my friends have a secret.”

People keep secrets because they have something that they don’t want anyone to know. People have all kinds of secrets. A secret affair, hiding a great deal of money secret, walking away from a relationship secret, or something terrible you, me, or we did when we were younger and we don’t want anyone else to know.

“Secrets are very protective. We protect our secrets intentionally to protect ourselves and at times others. The most commonly kept secret is that we have told a lie. Or maybe we would like to be with someone other than our current partner.”

By keeping a secret are we entering a conspiracy of some sort? Research suggests that some secrets can be harmful. Keeping a secret for a long time can be detrimental to your health it can cause you to have:
